Blog Post #12
Have you ever been to a neighborhood maybe in your own city or maybe out of town somewhere, and have been stunned by the beautiful murals plastered on the buildings of a town?
Today’s blog topic of discussion will be
Art and community: looking at how artists are using their work to bring people together and build stronger communities.
Art and community are closely intertwined and have a powerful impact on each other. Art can bring people together and create a sense of community, while community can provide artists with the support and resources they need to create and share their work.
One way that art and community relate is through public art projects. When artists create murals, sculptures, or other works of art in public spaces, they can help to beautify the community and create a sense of pride and ownership among residents. Public art can also serve as a conversation starter and a way to bring people together to discuss important issues.
Art can also help to preserve cultural heritage and traditions within a community. Artists can celebrate their cultural identity and history through dance, music, visual art, and other forms of expression. This can help to create a sense of belonging and connection among community members, especially those who may feel marginalized or disconnected from mainstream society.
Finally, art can be a powerful tool for social change. Artists can use their work to raise awareness about important social and political issues and to inspire action among community members. Through art, people can work towards a common goal and create positive change in their community and beyond.

MY ARTWORK AND REFLECTION
TIME TO REFLECT
Once you have completed your artwork I challenge you to take a piece of paper, or maybe jot it down in the notes on your phone but take a moment to reflect on your art and ask yourself questions to gain a deeper understanding of your emotions and yourself.
Example reflection questions:
What parts of your artwork do you feel are most successful?
Did your artwork turn out how you intended? Or did it take a different direction?
What would you do differently if you were to create this artwork again?
What did you enjoy most about this process?
What did you learn from creating this artwork?
